Before you look at the chart, take a moment to think about all the campaign events you’ve been to in the past year. Perhaps you’ve been to a rally and watched the whole thing from the press section, or a fundraiser or sit-down interview. You’ve probably also been to a few events where there wasn’t any media or the press was barred.
All of those events will have an unmistakable, shared quality — they were casual and free-wheeling, like a mixer in a living room. They were unscripted, and there was no media to trap anyone with tough questions. They were big, vibrant, and loud, and everyone from strangers to family and friends were there to see Trump.
But now consider a political rally, where a thousand Trump voters have been brought together by their shared hatred of the media and their love of Trump.

These events are smaller, quieter, and lack the liveliness of a living room party. They often lack not only the press, but the microphone. They might be small private fundraisers. They might even be a post-midterms confab or tribute. They’re all very different, but they all share one important quality: they’re all far more like a living room party than a rally.
When you see the chart, pay attention to the shape of the red line. Every event you’ve been to — even if it’s not a formal campaign event — has a similar shape to the one below.
